THE EARLY BIRD… AND OTHER INCOMPLETE IDIOMS!

Many of us have come across them whilst casually reading, we may have even heard them all in everyday conversation, but you might be very surprised to know that just a few people know them in their full form.
Most of the old sayings that are popular in the English language are only partially known and that their true meanings remain unfamiliar to the vast majority of the world’s population. Perhaps it happens because whenever someone tells a story they tend to leave out some of it, or maybe there is another reason for their unpopularity nowadays.

Let’s take an example that is very well known: “Great minds think alike”. Just like most of the popular sayings, it is incomplete. It ends with: “…but fools rarely differ”. So, the complete saying is “Great minds think alike, but fools rarely differ”. As you can see, it shows that conformity isn’t always a positive outcome, and just because more than one person has the same idea, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good one.

Here is another instance: “The early bird catches the worm” ends with “but the second mouse gets the cheese”.
It is implying that we don’t always need to rush into doing things as if we were wasting time if we waited, as it’s just as wise sometimes to hold back a while until it we feel it is appropriate and we are ready to act.

Furthermore, the saying “Blood is thicker than water” is incomplete as well: the original form is “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb”, which means that relationships that we choose to nourish are more relevant to us than those we are tied to by blood.

The sentence “curiosity killed the cat” actually is “curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back”, meaning that you shouldn’t allow anyone to tell you not to be curious and interested in new things!

Once more, “Birds of feather flock together” ends with “until the cat comes”.
The expression here starts by saying that people with similar qualities can be complementary, but it ends it tell us that we should be aware of fair-weather friends.

It is very interesting to observe how the half-finished proverbs encourage uniformity and uphold the status-quo as the complete sayings encourage lively, exciting, wide-ranging lives driven by personal passion and free choice.
These proverbs have been passed down the generations for a millennia and it’s not surprising that most of them have lost a few words and changed their original meanings. Nowadays we only hear them partially as they are slices of the popular culture which is constantly changing.

Ontem foi nosso encontro inaugural do novo Comitê de Empreendedorismo da Amcham. Estou muito orgulhosa de fazer parte dele junto a Robson Privado, sendo ele o Presidente e eu a Vice Presidente deste comitê. Iniciamos com o assunto Intraempreendedorismo. A familiaridade com o tema aumentou e curiosamente notamos o quanto o conceito evoluiu.
Mas o que é intraempreendedorismo afinal?
Intraempreender, como podemos deduzir, é Empreender dentro de uma organização como funcionário, o que pode apresentar algumas limitações, mas não mais tantas quanto se supunha há algum tempo. Peço que acompanhem o raciocínio a seguir:
Quais são as principais características do ser dito “empreendedor”?
Paixão – ter esta vontade de realização, de ver o negocio crescer, alcançar metas, produzir legado, ser feliz com o que faz;
Lócus de controle Interno – saber que é capaz de exercer influência sobre o ambiente, de modo a trazer benefícios, trazer soluções, por a “mão na massa”.
Preparo
Disposição a correr riscos
Atitude assertiva e automotivação em relação a objetivos e metas
Resiliência
E o que significa “Ownership”, tão comentado nos setores de RH das empresas? O pertencer e agir como dono da empresa, sentindo-se parte e preocupando-se com a imagem, os clientes, o futuro da empresa… nosso antigo “comprometimento”, o que as empresas que desejam crescer de maneira sustentável querem de seus funcionários. Entenderam a relação?
Empreendedores buscam iguais para crescer.
Para nos mantermos motivados precisamos trabalhar em algo que de fato sejamos apaixonados. Como disse Steve Jobs; “ Por que a paixão é o mais importante? A razão é muito simples… Porque sem ela, seria insanidade!”
E você, gosta e entende do que faz? Encontrou um lugar onde pode dar opiniões, contribuir com suas ideias? Já pode começar a empreender. In October On The Road Business Communication Center – BCCenter recorded its first interview from the series “How to be the entrepreuner of your own life” based on a concept and course being developed at On The Road.
The people interviewed are successful professionals who are either involved in a business partnership with us or are participating in one of the Consulting, mentoring, language or work sharing program.

Cassia Cassitas has developed her career in Technology. She has worked in large Brazilian and International companies, participated in innovative projects and the prospection of new technology along with her academic life.
As a professor, was part of many High Educational Institutions; as a student, specialised in Information Engineering, Didactics in University Instruction, Philosophy and Existentialism. Nowadays, Cassia is a French and English student and participates in seminars and lectures. She is also a mother of two adolescents who are book worms.
She published her first book, Domingo O Jogo in 2010, then reaching the top rank of the e-book best sellers in Brazil. In 2011, launched the version in English, “Sunday the Game”.
In 2012, published her first novel Fortuna A Saga da Riqueza, about the prosperity of four generations, being the climax the American Housing Bubble. In 2013, launched the English version “Saga of Wealth” and the second edition of Fortuna A Saga da Riqueza.
Traveling around the world and through her books, Cassia Cassitas lives in Curitiba with her family, her dreams and her books.
